We past through the dead gap about 3 days ago. Half way through it felt impossible
that anything could be living past it. That sounds bleak, but honestly that place is
bleak. I see why people think its a death wish now.
We followed what was probably the remnants of a road about a day and a half ago.
The trails got harder since then, thicker and thicker brambles early this mornin’.
But the air is cool and the vegetation make it a much nicer walk. Spring seems to be
in full bloom here. Its kinda amazing to see so much growth, ya just dont see it outside
of parks and gardens, let alone as wild as it is, so takin’ our time don’t seem so bad.
Its surreal to even see that there is this kinda world left. We all we brought up
bein’ told this was a dead world. When we made camp for the night you could see all of
the stars with just your eyes, it feels so damn quiet, and you’d think that would be hard
to bare, but it ain’t. The constant humm and drones been replaced by soft breezes and
distant rivers. Hell I’m pretty sure I even heard wildlife, couldn’t tell you what it
was, but something called out and had a reply.
Surreal is the only word I can think of.
Despite the niceties it really ain’t been easy lugging all this stuff on the cart,
battery died about a day ago, can’t really get enough solar durin the day whilst we move.
Winter said maybe we should travel at night and camp in the day, but my gut says thats
a bad idea. We just don’t know the landscape well enough as it is. I stripped as much
off the cart as I could to reduce its weight, but I’m a set to thinkin we just need to
straight up abandon it. Its too much to pull already and its only gonna get rougher.
Thankfully this terminal is small and the small solar rig on my pack gives us just
enough power to check maps and track our progress. Looks good so far, but I can’t help
thinkin we’re just walking out to the wilderness to die alone.
